The film requires patience initially; however, after introductions to the characters and once the plot establishes itself, it becomes a pleasant vehicle for the lead actor. "Gregory," portrayed by Jeff Bridges, is an understated college instructor seeking a purely non-romantic connection with a woman. He posts an advertisement, and among the replies he receives is one from "Rose" (Barbra Streisand). However, she wasn't volunteering—her newlywed sister, "Claire" (Mimi Rogers), submitted her name instead. They eventually meet and unexpectedly find common ground. Following several quickly unfolding events, it becomes apparent that they are developing feelings for each other, despite the reservations of her mother, “Hannah” (Lauren Bacall). At this point, "Rose" is eager to advance their relationship further than "Gregory" feels comfortable with. Simultaneously, her sister and husband, "Alex" (Pierce Brosnan), whom "Rose" has always held a certain fondness for, are experiencing marital problems, and given "Gregory's" clumsy involvement, it’s possible that “Rose” might be tempted to wander. The final forty minutes move along well, featuring some sharp lines, and the characters become more distinct as "Rose" discovers her true self. There are a few amusing moments with Bacall and Streisand exchanging witty remarks, and overall, I noticed clear similarities to "What's Up Doc?" (1972) as the story progresses toward an increasingly foreseeable conclusion. It’s reasonably enjoyable, but it’s unlikely you will recall it or the song performed by Bryan Adams at the very end.
