Brent Marchant on The Miracle Club

7/10 · May 5, 2024

Life can be tough, and when things get overwhelming, people often wish for something extraordinary to happen. For some, the possibility of such an event feels real, achievable through specific actions. Many Roman Catholics believe that journey involves traveling to Lourdes, France, a location considered sacred due to what's said to be an appearance by the Virgin Mary in 1858. A small Irish town felt similarly in 1967, and its residents embarked on a pilgrimage with the hope of seeing their difficulties disappear. This idea forms the foundation for Thaddeus O’Sullivan’s new film, which follows three generations of women as they travel to Lourdes, seeking relief from various burdens—some physical, some emotional, and mostly related to family or relationships. The movie is a blend of road trip story, a sort of “buddy” film (though that label isn't always accurate), and a chronicle of healing, forgiveness, and new beginnings. It thoughtfully examines the idea of creating our own moments of grace instead of depending on external forces, alongside understanding what faith and forgiveness truly mean. The film does move slowly at first, perhaps lingering a bit too long, and certain plot elements feel sentimental, familiar, and overly resolved. Yet, it also possesses a sharp wit, showcased through the excellent acting of its main cast, particularly Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, Laura Linney, and Stephen Rea. Some might dismiss “The Miracle Club” as being rather simple, but its intentions are good, making for an overall pleasant experience, especially for families. Those inclined to find fault may have plenty to pick at, but I don’t think that's justified given the film’s genuine message and heartfelt presentation. So, it deserves a chance—you could even discover your own small blessings along the way.
