This film feels like a combination of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" from 2003 and "The Sea Wolves" released in 1980, but I still found it to be quite enjoyable. Henry Cavill portrays Maj. March-Phillips, who receives an almost impossible assignment directly from Churchill. His mission is to gather a group of unconventional people and travel to western Africa, where the Nazis have established a base that's aiding their submarine warfare against the Allies. The operation is being managed from ships, and their task involves infiltrating the location, creating as much disruption as possible, sinking them, and also destroying any U-boats they can with explosives. It seems straightforward enough, right? However, these men are predictably going to be massively outnumbered, and because of the secretive nature of their mission, they won't receive much support from their own forces either. They set off on what is essentially a fancy yacht for this dangerous undertaking. What follows is characteristic Guy Ritchie filmmaking, complete with a playful soundtrack reminiscent of his "Sherlock Holmes" movies, and a cast primarily made up of British actors who don’t exactly stand out, but do deliver something amusingly wry and somewhat representative of the people who actually secured victory in the war. Meanwhile, Eiza González plays “Marjorie” and Babs Olusanmokun is “Hayes,” and they're responsible for creating a diversion on land to distract the greedily menacing "Luhr" (Til Schweiger) before everything culminates in some fairly spectacular explosions and a bit of costuming. It wouldn’t be really fair to call out any particular performer, as they are all generally comparable, but I did notice Alex Pettyfer seemed to be having fun, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who always looks young, genuinely appeared surprised to be in an action film, let alone one directed by Ritchie. This is a well-paced and engaging adventure that draws inspiration from actual historical events, which may have spurred Ian Fleming (played here somewhat unrealistically by Freddie Fox) to develop the blueprint for his "007." If you don't expect too much, you won’t be let down – it’s simply good entertainment.
