It’s disappointing to see the Pang brothers attempt a mainstream American production with such lackluster results. I really wanted to like this movie; I appreciated their earlier horror film "The Eye," and my expectations were high because of it. Now, I have to admit I'm genuinely let down; I was hoping for something as dark and frightening as “The Eye,” especially since the directors are the same, and they had a considerably larger budget this time around. It proves that even skilled filmmakers can make missteps—a point completely separate from financial resources, in my opinion. In "The Messengers," the Solomon family relocates to an isolated farm with the intention of starting fresh and leaving behind a painful past. Almost immediately upon arriving at their new home, the teenage daughter Jess begins experiencing strange occurrences and insists she’s seeing people living in the cellar. These are troubled spirits who need to deliver a message before it's too late. Her parents, however, who are frustrated with her behavior, dismiss her claims. It doesn't take long for them to realize that Jess might be telling the truth, and there is indeed something present in the house…something that has been lurking in the shadows for years and is waiting to be unleashed. I’m not going to criticize the fact that these kinds of stories have been told countless times before. I'm not one of those movie fans who complain about a lack of originality when it comes to the plot. Most films, particularly horror movies, share common elements, and while many reviews focus on the plot's simplicity and lack of innovation, my main concern is that this film isn’t scary—and that’s where it falls short. It seems like The Pang brothers sold out their talent just to break into the American film industry, without realizing they needed to imitate shallow, PG-rated horror movies. "The Messengers" becomes one of those films where very little actually happens. It's mostly a series of ambiguous events that leave you wondering “Did this really happen or was it all in my head?” I’ve had enough of that kind of nonsense. The real action seems to begin during the final twenty minutes, but even that doesn't redeem it for me. The ending feels contrived and left me with a feeling of dissatisfaction. It isn't the worst movie ever made, nor is it completely unwatchable. There are moments when it’s entertaining, and there are a few well-executed ghostly scenes that make it bearable. I also enjoyed the crow sequences; they reminded me fondly of "The Birds." The music during the opening and closing credits is, in my opinion, the best part—which isn't a good sign. Another negative point is the visible boom microphone appearing on screen multiple times. No comment on that technical oversight.
