I'm generally supportive of Colin First's work and willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and this film falls into that category. I found it enjoyable throughout, and the performances were good. However, there were a couple of things that bothered me. The family scenes showing his past while he was at sea felt disruptive; they didn’t seem particularly important or appropriately positioned to advance either the story or his character's development. Also, I think it might have been my own fault for not concentrating closely enough, but there were moments where I wasn’t entirely clear on what he was doing during the journey. Things became understandable after I looked into the real-life events that inspired the film, but before then, I felt a bit lost. Still, I wouldn't advise anyone against seeing it because of these issues or anything else.
