Ken (Marlon Brando) portrays a war veteran with paralysis who has come back home, ending up in a hospital that seems unable to deal with his mental state. His physician, Brock (Everett Sloane), attempts to grasp this man’s escalating aggression and conservative views, while Ken's wife, Ellen (Teresa Wright), moves between fear and affection. His actions gradually push everyone away—including the other soldiers—and he faces possible expulsion or even imprisonment. Brando gives a strong performance; it becomes clear why audiences were captivated by him here, not simply due to his appearance, but because of the palpable frustration and annoyance he conveys. This is understandable given that prosthetics weren't readily available at the time, meaning life in a wheelchair was all that remained possible. That situation challenged his sense of masculinity and created difficulties for Sloane and his wife. Wright also performs admirably, though her role is limited, as a woman who shares her husband’s frustration without any apparent way to resolve it. The film manages to be impactful despite its length of just under ninety minutes, offering a cautionary tale about the shortcomings of post-traumatic care for those experiencing profound physical and psychological injuries. While I wasn't entirely satisfied with how things ended, it remains something worth seeing.
