I can't honestly say that seeing this movie felt like a complete loss of time or money; I did find some entertainment value in watching it. Still, there’s definitely room for improvement. Right off the bat, I question the decision to make a film about a “dinosaur shark” and rate it PG-13. Whoever was responsible for that clearly misjudged things significantly. That seemed like the biggest problem with the movie; so many chances were missed. For instance, the entire beach scene at the end felt completely unnecessary. The script certainly had its share of logical flaws—gaps big enough to fit a Megalodon through them. But I was somewhat prepared for that, considering it’s science fiction and fantasy. Plus, these kinds of movies rarely seem to get anything better than mediocre writers working on them, at best. There were some positives, though. I read the book and didn't care for it much; my review gave it 2 out of 5 stars. The main issue was that the book felt more like a bad soap opera than a horror or thriller—it was full of unpleasant characters who were scheming and backstabbing, making it hard to enjoy. Jason’s ex-wife, for example, was so awful that she completely ruined the experience. Fortunately, the movie significantly reduced those elements from the book. By the end, there was really only one truly unlikeable character, and he got what was coming to him because of his own foolishness. Overall, I did enjoy the film, and as a fan of science fiction and fantasy, I'm glad I saw it. A giant prehistoric shark on the big screen does have a certain appeal. It benefited somewhat from Jason Statham’s involvement, but it really could have been better.
