Wuchak on The Medusa Touch

6/10 · Apr 5, 2022

A novelist living in London believes he possesses the ability to inflict harm with his thoughts, a conviction that pushes him toward insanity. Lee Remick portrays his psychiatrist, and Lino Ventura appears as a Scotland Yard investigator. "The Medusa Touch," released in 1978, unfolds as a deliberate psychological thriller blended with horror elements. It borrows the psychic abilities seen in “Carrie,” but incorporates the large-scale devastation found later in "The Mothman Prophecies." Films exploring similar concepts of mental power include "Powder," "Phenomenon," and “Youth Without Youth”; however, this film distinguishes itself because the central character uses his ability to create chaos instead of doing good. Similar to the initial episode of "Star Trek," titled “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the movie explores the idea that power leads to corruption. For example, if Morlar (Burton) wished to demonstrate his abilities to the therapist, a less confrontational action—like raising her skirt or moving a chair—would have sufficed. His ability appears only when he’s angered, much like Bruce Banner's transformations. Lee Remick was the youngest adult performer at 42 during filming; the other actors appeared noticeably older. Richard Burton, though just 52, seems considerably more aged, suggesting a difficult past. Still, his presence is undeniable—his voice and acting are exceptional. The movie’s length is 1 hour and 49 minutes. Filming took place in London and surrounding areas, including the White Cliffs of Dover and Reculver Towers, located roughly an hour outside the city along the coastline. GRADE: B-/B
