What initially drew me in was that, at least from what I’ve encountered, it felt fairly original. It's true that it deals with an apocalypse scenario, but I haven’t really seen anything quite like it before. Moving mazes and similar concepts have certainly been done, but the overall narrative seemed fresh to me. That was a welcome change in this era of mostly uninspired Hollywood rehashes. Generally speaking, I found the movie enjoyable. I would classify it as a “young adult” film. This isn't just because the main characters, and nearly the entire cast, are teenagers; the story itself seems geared towards a younger demographic. But who wouldn’t want to be young again? I appreciated the storyline. It certainly had its share of illogical moments and plot inconsistencies, but nothing overly bothersome in my view. I believe all of the actors did an adequate job with their parts. Some roles mainly involved standing in the background, naturally, but the central characters weren't bad. Teresa felt more like a device to advance the plot than a true lead character, though that needs to be acknowledged. I really liked the maze itself; it had a distinctive and appealing look and was well-executed from a cinematic standpoint. However, one thing that wasn’t explained in the movie was the reason behind everything. I realize this is meant to be part of the mystery, but it was still frustrating not to receive any hints at all. What could possibly be the point of having a group of kids endure this kind of ordeal? Occasionally, the characters' actions were somewhat irritating, naturally. I particularly disliked the storyline involving that one character who seemed determined to keep everything exactly as it was forever. It’s a familiar trope in stories like this, but it still gets on my nerves every time. Ultimately, I did find this to be an enjoyable movie. I would certainly want to see the other two books adapted for the screen as well. I haven't read the source material, so my impression that it was a new story is partly due to that fact.
