A clever, diverting, and memorable movie, but it strives too hard for an aloofness that doesn't quite work. The story follows a computer hacker from the city (Keanu Reeves) who suspects something isn’t right with his perception of reality. A woman possessing extraordinary powers (Carrie-Anne Moss) tells him that Morpheus holds the key to understanding things (Laurence Fishburne). To find him, he must evade relentless pursuers—the “agents”—and then experience a complete upheaval of everything he thought he knew. Marcus Chong and Joe Pantoliano also appear in supporting roles. "The Matrix," released in 1999, is an intellectual science fiction/action film that combines aspects of the initial two Terminator movies (from 1984 and 1991) with martial arts sequences and a fundamental idea reminiscent of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979), among other influences. It clearly took considerable skill to create this complex movie and make it enjoyable, so I commend the Wachowski Brothers—or sisters, as it turns out (I'm skeptical)—for their efforts. The actors are well-chosen, and Carrie-Anne looks fantastic throughout; normally, I’m not a fan of women with short hair, but she’s an exception. However, for me, the Wachowskis pushed it too far into comic book territory. The characters' affected poses in their shiny black clothes and sunglasses feel contrived, and the “chosen one” storyline is tired. The film has a running time of 2 hours and 16 minutes and was filmed in Sydney, Australia, with some exterior shots taken in Nashville and San Francisco. GRADE: B
