I really enjoyed The Matrix. The Matrix Reloaded, I found enjoyable enough to even use in an educational setting—and I'm serious about that. However, The Matrix Revolutions was just awful. It was genuinely a letdown. Reloaded did get a bit preachy with the philosophical aspects, but it still had plenty of distinctive action sequences to make up for characters who were so obviously stand-ins for religious ideas that they felt empty and superficial. Revolutions seemed to move away from the exploration of different philosophies, instead focusing intensely on just one—and then it made a major mistake. It shifted its focus entirely to computer-generated fight scenes, completely dropping the distinctive combination of martial arts and gunplay that had made the first two films so entertaining. Honestly! We weren't watching them for the story; we were watching because they were mind-bending, cool kung-fu action sci-fi movies...and then you just discarded all the action elements we loved in favor of computer-generated battles that even feel dull nearly 20 years later. It essentially left behind everything that had initially impressed us and took on a completely different style for the ending… and that’s where I lost interest.
