The Matrix Resurrections ended up being among my most significant letdowns this year. Lana Wachowski created a notably self-aware and meta film concerning the initial trilogy, brimming with interesting concepts, but hampered by flawed delivery. The movie includes awkward and unfunny scenes depicting discussions about the earlier films, alongside exposition that feels forced and overwhelming; throughout, the director seems intent on informing audiences of how great the original trilogy was, rather than crafting a worthwhile narrative for this new chapter. While the film boasts beautiful imagery and an effective musical score, they aren't sufficient to improve the surprisingly mediocre and disjointed action. Even with strong performances from Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jessica Henwick who truly shines, Resurrections simply didn’t resonate with me. If you're invested in this series, I would suggest seeing it; however, understand that what’s presented isn’t a fresh Matrix film, but rather a movie about the franchise itself. Rating: C-
