Jim Carrey portrays Ipkiss, a hapless bank employee constantly searching for romance without much luck. One evening, he discovers something in the river and rushes to save what he believes is a drowning man—only to find it’s a mask recently freed from a submerged vault. Bringing it home, he soon realizes the mask can adhere to his face, transforming him into a debonair and quick-witted individual (though with distinctly green skin), effortlessly charming everyone around him. This seems fortunate because Cameron Diaz appears as the appealing "Tina," suggesting the mask might be just what he needs to win her over. However, this mask possesses a playful nature; it grants its wearer’s wishes, both virtuous and otherwise, quickly drawing the attention of Police Officer Kellaway (Peter Riegert) as the mask amplifies conflicting aspects of Ipkiss's personality and invites complications. The movie functions adequately as a showcase for Carrey, who dominates from beginning to end. He is undeniably engaging and amusing, but I didn’t personally find him humorous. His comedic style feels overly forceful and obvious; it lacks subtlety or refinement. While the film moves at a brisk pace, I felt it became somewhat repetitive, evoking "Bugsy Malone" (1976) in my mind—though without any custard pies. Like Steve Martin's comedy, Jim Carrey’s approach simply didn't resonate with me. Despite being one of his stronger performances and Diaz lending some sparkle to the proceedings, the whole thing feels a bit too polished and theatrical for my taste.
