The discovery of a potent bracelet by Kree leader "Dar-Benn" (Zawe Ashton) triggers an unexpected surge of power within the decorative bracelet worn by “Kamala” (Iman Vellani), and immediately things spiral out of control. It turns out her newfound abilities link her to "Danvers" (Brie Larson) and her somewhat distant partner, "Rambeau" (Teyonah Parris). As they utilize their powers, they unexpectedly swap places – leading to widespread disruption, particularly at the family residence of the inexperienced superhero who is still oblivious to the true extent of her shiny trinket’s capabilities. “Dar-Benn” seeks retribution; having witnessed "Danvers" dismantle the AI that governed their planet, it has since begun a process of irreversible decline, so she intends to restore it by pilfering the atmosphere from one world, then the water from another – inhabitants of which communicate solely through song, so perhaps not a significant loss – before ultimately deciding to take Earth’s sun to revive their own dying star. With assistance from "Nick Fury" (Samuel L. Jackson), the trio must unify their abilities and concentrate on preventing this wicked scheme before it's too late. There isn’t anything fresh or inventive about this story; it’s a standard Marvel experience, complete with expected explosions, impressive special effects, and a remarkably thin plot. The outcome is predictable and feels hurried after an initial thirty minutes filled with repetitive fight sequences that lack energy and aren't particularly enjoyable. Larson possesses a natural acting ability (she evokes Grace Kelly), but the performers generally have little meaningful dialogue to work with as this film seems destined to be incorporated into another franchise in its next installment. Barbra Streisand makes a surprising vocal appearance during a rather inventive sequence involving both rescuing people and managing a group of animals, however I found the rest of it to be familiar territory; despite being shorter than usual, it still feels dated. It’s visually appealing, but I suspect you won't recall it for long.
