The team of the "Ares" mission is forced to evacuate their campsite in haste due to an unexpected and severe storm, returning to their spacecraft for a trip home. As the commander, “Lewis” (Jessica Chastain), orders them to leave, she learns that one crew member has died. However, after the immediate danger passes, it becomes clear that "Watney" (Matt Damon) is still alive. He’s been injured by an antenna and finds himself alone. What follows can be described as a space-based “Robinson Crusoe” story, where "Watney" works to heal his injuries and uses his expertise in botany to figure out how he'll stay alive. Back on Earth, everyone presumes him dead—until a scientist notices movement among the equipment and attempts to reestablish communication. Now, alongside NASA Director "Teddy" (Jeff Daniels) and “Mitch” (Sean Bean), there’s a desperate rush to devise a rescue plan before "Watney" ends up consuming his own food supply! I felt the movie was at its best when it focused on Damon using his intelligence to come up with clever solutions. While I can't vouch for how accurate the science is, the film includes brief video diary entries and his favorite music to help build momentum and make us care about his survival. I did find myself losing interest when a political storyline emerged; aside from the final twenty minutes, which were quite thrilling, the scientific developments started feeling too predictable and, strangely enough for a science fiction movie, somewhat unbelievable! The visual effects are impressive and work well with the imaginative narrative of a man relying on his resourcefulness to survive. Despite its length of almost 2½ hours, it goes by quickly—and there’s even some ABBA music included.
