“Sigismond” (Joe Dallessandro) enjoys a lively marriage with his wife “Sergine” (Mireille Audibert), and he's devoted to their young son. However, a business trip to Paris leads him to receive a letter, after which he begins an extravagant affair with call-girl “Diana” (Sylvia Kristel), developing a growing fixation on her. Her pimp isn’t happy about this new arrangement and responds with some rather forceful attempts to stop him, but will that be enough? At its core, the film presents a series of explicit scenes where the camera focuses intently as women disrobe and engage in sexual activity. While it may have been groundbreaking for French cinema in 1976 to portray nudity in this way, I found myself quite bored after roughly ten minutes of this narrative-lacking indulgence. To give “Sigismond” some credit, there are hints scattered throughout the later sections of the film explaining his actions, and the ending does have a surprise element. Nevertheless, neither he nor “Diana” are given any real depth through character development or meaningful conversations, and as it continued, it evoked images of those cheeky postcards you’d find at the beach a century ago, or looking at something through a kaleidoscope. Honestly, this felt quite repetitive and uninteresting. It isn't gritty or scandalous; it simply lacks excitement.
