The film centers on Thibaut (Benjamin Lavernhe), a successful conductor living in the United States who occasionally returns to France for performances. During one such visit, he tells his sister Rose (Mathilde Courcol-Rozés) that he requires a bone-marrow transplant. When she turns out not to be a match, this triggers a series of events leading him to ask Jimmy (Pierre Lottin) – a brother he never knew existed and who resides in a struggling town facing the closure of his workplace – for assistance. Initially reluctant and skeptical, the movie then shows how these two men grapple with their shared history and current circumstances as they attempt to understand the random nature of fate amid feelings of bitterness and advantage. They do share one commonality: a passion for music. It turns out Jimmy plays trombone in his local miners’ band, providing an avenue for them to connect—or not. The film evokes “Brassed Off” (1996), offering social commentary on the devastation of traditional rural industries and the limited prospects they leave behind, alongside a touch of romance and some truly dreadful uniforms! Beautiful classical Mozart pieces are featured, along with songs by Charles Aznavour, and entertaining band rehearsals showcasing the townspeople’s surprising musical abilities—with a little encouragement. The ending isn't particularly suspenseful, although there is a plot twist; it's fundamentally a story about family, told without excessive emotionalism and with a certain amount of cheerfully stubborn French humor. I’ve always wondered what exactly an orchestral conductor does, waving his baton at accomplished musicians, but this film may have shed some light on that—and also the importance of seating arrangements!
