I’m not sure what all the fuss is about! It feels like an overstatement, at least. I saw some incredibly positive notices for this movie. I was anticipating a well-crafted, introspective, quiet science fiction film with believable performances. What I actually witnessed was so disappointing that I began to wonder if something wasn’t right. How could it possibly have earned such high marks? The initial idea seemed promising, but the story quickly descended into melodrama and then became condescending and frankly awful. While I don't subscribe to any particular faith, I thought the criticism of religion felt excessive and unnecessary. Most of the actors appeared to be doing what they could with the material, yet everything felt dull and lifeless. The characters didn’t feel authentic, and the dialogue wasn’t realistic at all. If you want to create a science fiction film that avoids special effects and instead focuses on realism and storytelling, then the writing needs to sound natural and the story needs to be captivating. Unfortunately, neither of those things is present here. The cinematography was also problematic; I realize it's a low-budget film shot in one location, but the quality of the film stock! It might seem trivial, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’ve seen better-looking made-for-TV movies and even daytime soap operas from the 1980s. I simply can't understand why anyone would consider this a good movie, let alone something exceptional. I’ve read enthusiastic reviews, some giving it a perfect score, praising how thought provoking and challenging it was. My reaction was one of disapproval; my goal became just finishing this terrible film. Many reviewers seem to emphasize that the writer also worked on the original *Star Trek* series. That doesn't seem like enough reason to rate this so highly. I felt cheated after seeing this movie. Some people have told me I didn’t understand it, but I really did. I grasped every scene, understood the implications, and recognized the moral questions being raised. It was just that the underlying message seemed superficial and unconvincing. Someone even suggested I should have watched *Transformers* instead. For the record, I wanted a slow-paced, intelligent film without explosions. Instead, I got this. 3/10; steer clear unless you’ve already bought into the hype and are predisposed to liking it simply because the writer had a connection to *Star Trek*.
