John Chard on The MacKintosh Man

7/10 · Feb 12, 2014

John Huston directs The Mackintosh Man, which was written by Walter Hill and William Fairchild based on Desmond Bagley's novel, The Freedom Trap. Paul Newman leads a strong ensemble including Dominique Sanda, Ian Bannen, James Mason, Michael Horden, and Harry Andrews. Maurice Jarre composed the music, and Oswald Morris handled the cinematography. The film involves espionage as Newman portrays Joseph Rearden, an agent for British Intelligence who is sent to prison for two decades after carrying out a task ordered by The Mackintosh Man (Andrews), though this turns out to be part of something larger. It’s a solid and adequately acted drama, although the last portion feels disappointing. The most engaging moments occur when Rearden finds himself in prison and during the initial planning stages following his escape; afterward, the narrative seems to struggle, attempting to complicate a straightforward story. There's enjoyable mystery in deciphering the intentions and methods of those involved, and there’s plenty of action as Rearden is drawn into a world of spying and counter-spying. The movie features numerous questionable accents, and Jarre's score tries unsuccessfully to emulate Anton Karas’ music from The Third Man, coming across as an uninspired imitation. More of a heist film than a cerebral thriller, it remains consistently entertaining, and the cast provides good value for the time invested. 7/10
