Sometimes the most unexpected delights come from places you wouldn't anticipate, particularly with simpler comedies. I approached “The Machine” with very low hopes—the initial impression wasn’t promising—but I was pleasantly surprised by almost everything it offered. It seemed like this film shouldn’t have succeeded and certainly didn’t appear destined to be as enjoyable as it turned out to be; however, it's one of those rare instances where a smaller movie focuses on what it does well and emerges victorious. Stand-up comedian Bert Kreischer gained recognition by sharing tales from his college days, which led to the moniker “The Machine,” stemming from an alleged encounter with Russian mobsters in the early 1990s. Director Peter Atencio created a film based on Kreischer’s comedy routine, incorporating fictional elements and action sequences. The story unfolds two decades after that original trip to Russia, and Bert (Kreischer) is now married with children. It's his eldest daughter’s Sweet 16 celebration when two unexpected guests arrive: his estranged father Albert (Mark Hamill) and a formidable Russian mobster named Irina (Iva Babic). Irina kidnaps the pair and transports them back to Russia, forcing Bert to make amends for past actions against her family—actions that involved robbing a train and stealing a treasured heirloom. The three of them then revisit the path taken by the younger Bert (Jimmy Tatro) many years prior. The premise provides a solid foundation for a humorous film, and the clever dialogue and physical humor are consistently funny. I found myself laughing throughout the entire movie, and I can’t recall a single joke that didn't land well. Kreischer might not be the most skilled actor, but his experience as a stand-up has given him a relaxed and natural presence on screen. He is relatable, and he, Hamill, and Babic share genuine chemistry together. Tatro is also quite entertaining as the younger Bert, portraying a goofy and inebriated college student who does many foolish things. A few of the action scenes feel somewhat cheesy, but that’s about my only criticism. It's been a while since I watched a comedy where lines stick with me for weeks afterward, but “The Machine” is so funny that several of the one-liners could easily become part of my collection of memorable movie quotes. This lively film isn't for everyone, but those seeking laughter and an enjoyable time at the cinema should definitely consider it.
