This romance unfolds in an unusual way. “Alex” (Denis Lavant), living as a homeless man on the Pont Neuf bridge while it's being repaired, scrapes by with drugs and alcohol, having few connections beyond his dealer. One night he finds a woman already sleeping there. "Hans" (Klaus-Michael Grüber) intends to have her gone by morning, but when that day arrives, “Alex” learns that “Michèle” (Juliet Binoche) is an artist who has even drawn him. He wants the sketch and she agrees if he’ll pose for a more formal portrait. This marks the beginning of a connection where he discovers she's suffering from a progressive eye condition that could lead to blindness, so their relationship develops as much out of reliance on each other as it does through budding affection. Later, while riding the metro, “Alex” sees a public advertising campaign that has the potential to significantly alter both of their lives. It’s his reaction to this campaign that leads to a tragedy and pushes them toward choices with lasting consequences for their bond. Juliet Binoche is certainly one of the most adaptable performers currently working; she moves effortlessly between comedy, romance, and drama—and here, her performance is excellent, matched by Lavant's portrayal of an idiosyncratic character who defies common assumptions about people experiencing homelessness in a city where winters are harsh and attitudes can be dismissive. The film isn’t consistently paced, and it does linger at times, but overall I felt this was a story that demonstrates genuine fondness doesn’t require conventional displays—perhaps with the exception of some inexpensive wine.
