Maurice Chevalier plays "Count Alfred," who is brought back to his country and swiftly becomes entangled in the romantic schemes of the Queen, portrayed by Jeanette MacDonald. She’s searching for a spouse, but her choice falls upon “Alfred.” He's then elevated to a prince to make him more acceptable, and subjected to an embarrassing wedding ritual where he's required to pledge love, honor, and obedience! Despite this, he finds himself genuinely in love, which makes the situation manageable—at least initially. However, he soon realizes that being someone’s trophy husband can be rather tedious; even something as simple as having breakfast proves difficult. Simultaneously, the Kingdom is facing financial difficulties, and the Queen needs to avoid any public relations issues because a loan is pending. "Alfred" understands this and recognizes it as an opportunity to alter the power dynamic within his marriage. While these events unfold in the royal household, “Jacques” (Lupino Lane) and “Lulu” (Lillian Roth) are dealing with their own marital disagreements, though theirs seem more balanced—even if she frequently holds the upper hand. The film includes roughly six forgettable songs written by Victor Schertzinger and Clifford Grey, which Chevalier and MacDonald perform without much enthusiasm. I noticed that as the initial charm of this couple's relationship faded, so did my investment in a story lacking genuine chemistry.
