Sally Hawkins delivers an energetic portrayal as the resolute Philippa Langley. Following a separation from her spouse (Steve Coogan), she finds herself feeling somewhat depleted when she brings her son to a theatrical production of Shakespeare's "Richard III." Captivated by the narrative of that tragedy, she connects with a group devoted to Richard III and comes to believe that his reputation has been unfairly tarnished. Consequently, she embarks on a quest to locate what was previously an unknown burial site. The film draws from actual events, so the eventual outcome is known, yet the unfolding story remains fairly compelling as she attempts to persuade those in authority to permit her to excavate their parking lot, then tries to deflect assertions of triumph before the final struggle to ensure he receives a dignified burial reflecting his true standing. It’s pleasant enough to watch, particularly once her quest truly gets underway. She is aided by archaeological supervisor Mark Addy and spiritual guidance from Harry Lloyd's ghostly depiction of the last Plantagenet King – who, along with his steed – appears eager to assist her from beyond the grave, which helps keep the film’s pace lively. It isn’t essential viewing on a big screen, and it takes some time to build momentum initially, but I did find myself enjoying it.
