The film’s director, Amando de Ossorio—who also made the “Blind Dead” series—clearly had a hand in this one, and it feels similar to those movies but improved, at least in my opinion. It has the feel of a storybook with some really disturbing violent scenes that recall episodes of "Kolchak: The Night Stalker," like “Horror in the Heights,” though considerably more graphic and frightening. The setting of a school for girls reminds me of Hammer’s “Lust for a Vampire” from 1972. The man they bring in to guard the school is dressed in a funny combination of Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash styles (played by Tony Kendall). But Helga Liné, with her red hair, really steals the show as the supernatural character named in the title. Silvia Tortosa, who plays Elke, a teacher at the school, also makes an impression with her large eyes. The movie is like a werewolf story, except it features a reptile-like monster. And then you see characters that are similar to Dracula’s brides (they aren't actually them, but they have a comparable vibe). If you enjoy vibrant European horror films from that era, such as “The Devil’s Nightmare,” this one is worth checking out. It has a running time of 1 hour and 25 minutes and was filmed in Madrid, Spain, including the Alberche river, with additional footage shot in west-central Germany along the Rhine. GRADE: B/B+
