It’s a good film that I would happily watch again, and I feel comfortable suggesting it to others. Even with the "Despicable Me" and "Minions" movies under their belt, Illumination has shown they're capable of quality work, and they really captured the whimsical nature of Dr. Seuss' world here, regardless of how logical it might or might not be as it unfolds. It’s been some time since I read “The Lorax,” but my recollection is that the motivation to plant a tree wasn't about attracting someone's attention. As far as I can remember, the Onceler's story was simply a children's book with a few memorable songs. Aside from that, there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had in this film, and it delivers a (basically) uplifting message concerning environmental protection, although it doesn’t quite pack the punch it could have, but it is presented in an accessible way. I won’t go into all the details needed to explain my thoughts on teaching people about the environment, but there's something strange about the sequence of scenes showing him “running a business,” where it almost seems like there’s a subtle commentary on capitalist enterprise while we are being told that this is wrong—or perhaps that was the intention: that there needs to be some kind of compromise and balance. I just found it amusing. At least they made sure to remind us not to dismiss older people. The design of the world and characters is very well done, and I’m still humming one of the songs as I type this, but there's one issue I have with the script: that the Onceler divides his story across several days. Once he has an audience (it’s like a play within a play—a Shakespearean technique), and the film has its own audience, just get on with telling the story. I don’t appreciate breaking up a narrative into smaller parts when it isn't needed (if you have ever watched a show in one sitting, you understand what I mean). Thankfully, he didn’t reverse the order of events and tell it backward like they did in "Pulp Fiction." While the Lorax himself is a somewhat disappointing, though understated, character, I think most people will find something to enjoy.
