The unexpected impact of viewing **THE LONG WALK** following a particularly turbulent and concerning week in America—is the message of hope, sacrifice, and brotherhood it conveys. These ideas manage to cut through the dark, dystopian atmosphere of this adaptation of an early Stephen King novel sharing the same title, unexpectedly providing what seems like a direct response to oppression, authoritarianism, and government control: Love. That’s right, love—the kind referenced in John 3:16. This is how you can bring down empires, end tyrannical rule, eliminate corruption, and revitalize communities—through love. However, being heroic comes at a cost, and the sacrifices required are frequently too substantial to accept. If that feels like an oversimplification of the film, I won't apologize for it. Copper Hoffman and David Jonsson provide exceptional performances showcasing brotherhood and friendship while enduring a terrible ordeal reminiscent of the Bataan Death March that American and Filipino prisoners of war experienced during World War II in 1942. (Of the approximately 72,000 to 78,000 POWs forced to walk the 65 miles, as many as 20,000 American and Filipino POWs died from the suffering). Facing off against ‘The Major,’ portrayed by Mark Hamill with a deep voice, these young men walk toward their inevitable fate for days. The underlying meaning is powerful, and Hamill’s portrayal embodies the cold, unyielding, authoritarian government that suggests such marches enhance national pride and efficiency, promising immense wealth to one fortunate participant. It's a cruel incentive. It’s disheartening to witness a society submit to such a diminished state—and the emotionless faces lining the route reflect this despair. Director Francis Lawrence (who directed the similarly-themed **HUNGER GAMES** series) doesn’t focus heavily on plot details, but with a well-written script and a harsh, bleak story, **THE LONG WALK** deserves to be considered alongside **STAND BY ME** and **SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION** as one of the best and most moving adaptations of Stephen King's work. A trio celebrating brotherly love, essentially. Not everyone will connect with this film—but for those who do, it’s impossible to ignore that Hoffman and Jonsson have created something truly special. The awards committees would be smart to recognize their contributions.
