Going into this movie, I assumed it would be like The Hunger Games or Battle Royale, only cheaper. What I got was something that felt nonsensical and concluded with a particularly disappointing finale. The narrative centers on a few boys who volunteer for a government program involving an ongoing trek with fifty people competing. The catch is that the first forty-nine to quit—regardless of why—are eliminated. Apparently, this event is intended to inspire the populace, as the victor will be rewarded with money and a wish, which ultimately influences how things wrap up, though not very clearly. The film depicts a bleak future, but it never really illustrates what makes it so bleak. It’s stated that society has recovered from a war and people are having difficulties, yet there's not much elaboration on these points. There’s also a scene showing the government suppressing opposition through executions—but only after offering those targeted an opportunity to reconsider their beliefs by embracing the government's ideology. This slightly lessens the impact of its authoritarian nature. Throughout the walk, people meet their ends in various ways, frequently due to rather trivial circumstances like illness or unprovoked aggression towards security personnel. I believe the filmmakers were attempting to convey that one of the main characters was driven to defy this system because of something from his past, but ultimately it felt like a drawn-out film lacking genuine engagement.
