Harold (Bob Hoskins) has dedicated the previous decade to establishing himself by assisting various criminal operations, and he’s now planning a legitimate venture: a large-scale dockside project intended for sale to American investors. With those potential buyers in London and poised to finalize the agreement through lavish entertaining, events begin to spiral out of control. The death of his close friend Colin (Paul Freeman), who was killed at a local swimming pool, and an incident at one of Harold’s pubs—attributed to a “gas leak”—lead him to suspect foul play. He realizes someone is actively working against him, likely from within his own circle. Could it be his girlfriend Victoria (Helen Mirren)? Perhaps his driven assistant Jeff (Derek Thompson), or maybe the enforcer Harris (Bryan Marshall)? Harold must rally all of his resources if he hopes to save what remains and secure a deal with these already doubtful investors. I wouldn't characterize Hoskins as an actor known for range, but in this film, he portrays the increasingly confused gangster effectively, and director John Mackenzie maintains a brisk tempo while we attempt to figure out who is attempting to destroy his business. Mirren’s presence feels limited; however, observant viewers might notice Pierce Brosnan and Karl Howman filling minor roles as Irish characters who seem involved in the unfolding problems. The film hasn't stood the test of time perfectly, but it remains a worthwhile drama featuring considerable danger and, thankfully, absolutely no romantic subplots.
