The film presents "Tonto" (played by Johnny Depp) sharing stories with a child at a carnival about his experiences alongside the inexperienced lawyer, "John Reid" (Armie Hammer). The narrative begins when "Tonto" saves “Reid” following an attack led by the villainous "Butch Cavendish" (William Fichtner), and they subsequently embark on a quest to correct this injustice and capture the criminal. However, what follows isn't particularly engaging. It feels like a collection of loosely connected incidents; Hammer, while pleasant to look at, lacks the necessary presence to inject any real charm into his portrayal. Depp seems to be simply repeating his "Jack Sparrow" persona, only with a different facial expression. The plot developments are foreseeable and honestly quite boring. There’s a certain slapstick quality to it all; the dialogue attempts cleverness but ultimately relies too heavily on Depp's performance style – which I found repetitive and uninspired. While the ending is somewhat amusing, the film leans far too much on a single character, and that didn't succeed for me. Running close to two and a half hours, the movie feels excessively long; perhaps trimming around 45 minutes and focusing more on action sequences alongside a stronger script could have improved it, but as it stands, this is an extended, hollow experience that edges toward parody. Those who are Depp enthusiasts might feel differently, but for everyone else, it’s essentially just something to showcase him – and not a particularly successful vehicle at that.
