The film would likely be acceptable—perhaps even enjoyable—if it weren't branded as *The Lone Ranger* and didn’t attempt to present itself as a faithful adaptation of that story. The problem is, it isn't a Lone Ranger movie at all! I place this alongside the disappointing *Green Hornet* film; both represent an instance of someone in Hollywood—clearly lacking good sense—grabbing a familiar title and assuming they could do whatever they pleased with it. The Lone Ranger should be the sole survivor of his ranger unit, embodying heroism and intelligence, as should Tonto. Instead, here, the Lone Ranger is a lawyer who seems inexperienced and makes mistakes frequently. Depp's portrayal of Tonto is eccentric. It’s disheartening to find yourself appreciating the villains more than the protagonists. William Fichtner does a commendable job with Butch Cavendish. The movie has moments of amusement, some laughs, decent special effects, and isn’t terribly made overall. Still, I repeatedly thought things like "what an idiot," “what the f…”, and "this is not *The Lone Ranger*" while watching. If you're unfamiliar with the Lone Ranger or don't mind if the film deviates significantly from the source material, you might find it entertaining. Sadly, I was greatly let down.
