Watching this movie was a strange experience; I just concluded a self-imposed break from relationships that lasted twelve years, following some negative experiences early in the 2000s. It was captivating to observe a dystopian setting where being single was so negatively viewed that it had become illegal. I never imagined something like that could happen, but current trends toward extreme sensitivity and both religious and political extremism suggest that, unfortunately, anything is now conceivable. The concept behind the film struck me as truly impressive, and the music and visuals were exceptional. The unusual screenplay and daring approach to directing resulted in some of the finest performances I’ve witnessed from Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, and John C. Reilly. I am eager to see more work from this strikingly original writer/director; may his perspective, reminiscent of Bunuel, continue.
