Timothy Dalton takes over the role of Ian Fleming’s "007" from Roger Moore, and this initial film isn't disappointing. The plot might not be the strongest element, yet it remains a fast-paced adventure filled with explosions and silly gadgets that keep things moving briskly for more than two hours. “Bond” is tasked with assisting "Gen. Koskov" (Jeroen Krabbé), who wants to defect, starting in Berlin; during this mission he meets the dangerous cellist "Kara" (Maryam d'Abo). There’s some amusement to be had from Julie T. Wallace’s performance, a Harrier jet appearance, and an English manor house destined for destruction—all of which create a backdrop for a story that combines risky international spying with style and lots of entertainment. Andreas Wisniewski’s character probably boosted sales of 501 jeans, while Joe Don Baker's portrayal likely helped toy soldier sales; Desmond Llewelyn continues to equip our hero with inventive devices to help him avoid certain doom! Art Malik isn't entirely believable as an Afghan rebel, and I noticed the absence of Lois Maxwell’s brief appearances as the smitten "Moneypenny," but apart from that, this is a genuinely enjoyable example of spirited and quickly paced Cold War excitement. It truly shines when viewed in a theater—certain aspects of the visuals, particularly the aerial shots, are best appreciated on a large screen, and an opening track by A-ha sets a pleasant tone for everything that follows. While not the finest installment in the series, it suggests good things to come from this new version.
