A truly unpleasant experience; I wouldn’t suggest it to anyone, even younger viewers. The most redeeming aspect of the film is how badly done the villain is—it's as if Van Helsing were a disagreeable person and vampires were all pleasant. The sister offers some interest, caught between different cultures, but that quickly fades when child vampires appear. One of the most disturbing vampire portrayals involves imprisoning someone in the body of a thirteen-year-old for centuries, and they treat it like a joke, as if the character really is just thirteen. Some stories establish vampires with enough biological realism to reproduce, creating “pure” bloodlines ("Blade"), or allowing them to mate with humans under specific circumstances, which would then result in either a Dampir or a human. It’s extremely unclear what's happening here; it seems like this group regularly inducts children into their vampire society so they can imitate human customs. Then there’s the issue of species jumping, where animals become infected (there’s a better version to be found in "Bunnicula"). And then we have these strange homoerotic subplots, and I don't necessarily object to them, but they are stranger than “Top Gun”—at least that movie made sense regarding the connection between those two characters. The human character is clearly attracted to the vampire boy, and they attempt to portray a crush on a girl in order to make him more relatable to audiences, but it comes across as if he’s interested in everyone. And what about the poor redhead? His boyfriend wakes him up in the middle of the night for this adventure and doesn't seem to appreciate him at all. It’s obvious that whoever made this had a substantial budget and a detailed list of requirements. The script was given to a writer who recognized it as garbage, something beneath his talents, and decided to show the producers what they’d done. Because he possessed the skill to do so, he created this awful thing he'd been asked to produce in the least acceptable way possible while still being good enough not to damage his career. And I am certain that it was heavily edited. Just avoid this movie entirely. Vampires shouldn't be likable characters in the same way humans are; they can exist on their own terms. We need powerful, blood-drinking characters again.
