The preview for this movie initially caught my attention, but it appears they squeezed all of its appeal into the advertising. It brought "Se7en" (1995) to mind, centering around Denzel Washington as “Deke,” a detective whose past led to him being assigned to a small-town police job. He’s sent to the city to retrieve some evidence and gets drawn into an investigation headed by the self-assured "Baxter" (Rami Malek, who feels somewhat stiff in the role) concerning a series of violent murders. The film's name reflects Washington’s character; he approaches his work with precision and attention to detail, and this unusual partnership begins to show promise as they identify a suspect. However, that suspect (played by Jared Leto) isn't easily outsmarted, and the ensuing chase quickly blurs the lines of who is manipulating whom. The opening thirty minutes are fairly well-organized and impactful; you get a feel for the mystery unfolding, and the two leads work together effectively. Unfortunately, the rest of the film—roughly an hour—is considerably weaker, culminating in an ending that I thought seriously diminished the entire experience. Any sense of believability is lost, almost as if director John Lee Hancock was pressed for time and had to rush the final act, resulting in a rushed resolution that ultimately disappoints. It’s not worth seeing on the big screen; it'll likely be available on a streaming platform soon, providing a way to pass two hours.
