This live-action adaptation of *The Little Mermaid* ranks among Disney’s stronger re-imaginings. I would even suggest placing it on par with the original animated film from 1989, although I don't have any particular attachment to that earlier version. Halle Bailey is well-cast as Ariel. Daveed Diggs, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy all deliver acceptable performances; while I’m not entirely sure about McCarthy’s portrayal of Ursula, she remains entertaining. Awkwafina as Scuttle was the character I found most enjoyable. The visuals are pleasing to look at, both in the underwater scenes and those set on land. The music is generally what you'd anticipate—"Under the Sea" and Ariel’s songs are good, and "The Scuttlebutt" surprisingly manages to be effective. It felt like a slight trim to the length might have been beneficial, but that isn’t a significant issue.
