Reno on The Little Hours

7/10 · Feb 4, 2018

I’m glad I gave this movie a chance because it's unlike most films out there. It isn’t exactly a work of genius, but it offered something different from what I typically watch. The production values are quite good, and I have to commend everyone who had a hand in making it. The actors were exceptionally well-chosen; every single one delivered a fantastic performance. I honestly can't imagine anyone disliking such an unusual find—though, predictably, film critics probably would. Aubrey Plaza isn’t exactly a household name, but her movies consistently generate buzz. I’ve enjoyed all of her recent projects, and this is another distinctive addition to that list. It marks her third collaboration with the director, following a previous enjoyable comedy. The story is inspired by a book, though it mainly uses satire. It centers on a convent of nuns located in an isolated area. A new gardener arrives, and what follows reveals some unpleasantness. Numerous hidden truths come to light as the events progress toward their conclusion. If you’re tired of standard comedies, I recommend this one. While it wasn't particularly intense or full of unexpected plot developments, watching it is a worthwhile experience. It contains elements of adult humor, so it isn't appropriate for all audiences. Those with strong religious convictions might find it irritating. Just approach it with an open mind and you’re likely to be entertained. It may not be flawless, but I think it’s somewhat overlooked this year. _6.5/10_
