It’s not quite as terrible as *Cats* or *Star Wars: Episode IX*. The film is disappointing and uneven. It appears 2019 was a year when major releases prioritized visual appeal, but ultimately lacked substance—and this one follows that pattern. While the visuals are generally impressive (aside from Simba’s teenage phase and the absence of visible genitalia which prevents the animals from appearing truly realistic), nearly everything else falls short. The heightened realism of the animal characters also makes certain moments surprisingly frightening for younger viewers. The creative decisions made here feel peculiar. The voice acting is odd, with a mix of African accents, American voices, and various in-betweens—it seems like there was no cohesive plan. Unnecessary scenes and dialogue detract from the movie compared to earlier installments. The re-recorded songs are simply not successful, and this marks the first Hans Zimmer score I haven’t enjoyed in quite some time; it sounds as though he did very little work on it. And a baby warthog unexpectedly shows up at the film's conclusion near Pumbaa with no mother present—what was that about? There is still a discernible storyline, which does mean it’s superior to the mess that was *Rise of Skywalker* or *Cats*. Just another movie I’ll likely forget.
