This remake of ‘The Lion King’ represents a significant failure; it's the worst offering yet in Disney’s seemingly endless series of reboots. There's absolutely nothing positive to say about it, as every choice made seems either poorly thought out or executed so badly that it borders on unprofessionalism. Director Favreau has created something incredibly lifeless, devoid of suspense and any depth when it comes to the characters, dragging along at a snail’s pace with no real purpose and never offering a reason for its controversial existence. Even as someone who wasn't particularly fond of the original film, I was shocked by how little effort this version makes to grasp why so many people were drawn to the 1994 movie in the first place. This film demonstrates beyond any doubt that Disney isn’t interested in creating quality films or respecting its own history. They simply don't care if the movie is good, or whether audiences enjoy it; their sole focus is exploiting nostalgia to get you to buy a ticket so they can extract as much money from you as possible, and perhaps even trick you into believing you had a pleasant experience by flashing familiar images from your childhood across the screen. ‘The Lion King’ stands as the ultimate example of commercializing nostalgia, and its likely success at the box office will only highlight how easily we are fooled and how effectively they have conditioned us to ignore the quality of what we're watching. If this is a glimpse into the future of mainstream movies, then we should be very concerned.
