Wuchak on The Limehouse Golem

8/10 · Mar 29, 2024

The story unfolds in Limehouse, 1880, where a woman—played by Olivia Cooke—is scheduled for execution after being accused of poisoning her husband, portrayed by Sam Reid. A Scotland Yard inspector, Bill Nighy, finds himself increasingly sympathetic to her situation while trying to unravel a series of local murders. Daniel Mays appears as his assistant constable. Drawing from the 1994 novel, “The Limehouse Golem” (2016) presents a Victorian murder mystery steeped in London’s atmosphere. It combines elements reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper stories, along with echoes of Jekyll & Hyde, similar to films like "From Hell,” “Jack the Ripper” (1976), “Edge of Sanity” and "The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll." If you're looking for a film set in Victorian times—complete with dark clothing, stone streets, gaslight, carriages, attractive women, music hall shows, gruesome killings, and an engaging mystery—this one should fit the bill. Although Olivia Cooke delivers a strong performance as the lead actress, María Valverde is more striking visually as Music Hall performer Aveline. Her character isn’t particularly appealing, but the director does make sure to showcase her beauty. There's even a surprise appearance by Karl Marx—he did spend much of his time at the British Library from 1849 until he died in 1883. Some viewers have criticized the ending as “predictable,” but the film explores several potential suspects before settling on one conclusion. It makes you wonder if these critics would prefer a mystery that remains unsolved, or if they’d be happy with any other outcome. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes and was filmed in West Yorkshire, using locations such as Leeds and Keighley, the library at University of Manchester, and exterior shots of the British Museum in London.
