The story follows a late 1800s murder mystery, centering on a young woman and an older police officer as they look into several killings. Elizabeth Cree had a difficult upbringing, but she was close to achieving her ambition of becoming a successful actress in town. However, a sudden murder put everything she’d worked for at risk, forcing her to team up with a detective to clear her name. The narrative is full of unexpected turns and complications that threaten her freedom. The resolution reveals a final twist that completely changes the situation. I really enjoy these kinds of period pieces; the atmosphere was wonderful. There's consistent suspense and a good rhythm to how the story unfolds. The actors are great, particularly Olivia Cooke for me. Bill Nighy wasn’t bad either, though Cooke truly stood out despite being one of the main characters. It isn't a perfect film, but it provided entertainment. I believe it was a solid adaptation. The only real flaw is that many viewers will likely figure out the ending twist, which seems to have been done on purpose. Still, it’s a pretty good movie. _6/10_
