I honestly couldn't tell you what I was looking at as the credits started, but I really enjoyed _The Lighthouse_. I had been wanting to watch this film ever since I first saw the trailer, and it recently became available for rent on YouTube. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson are in it? What’s that strange movie with its square black-and-white look all about, you might ask? Here's what they say it's about: _Two lighthouse keepers struggle to keep their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious island off the coast of New England in the 1890s._ Knowing that the same director as _The VVitch_ made this gives you an idea of the craziness ahead. And boy, does it get crazy. With what feels like the most perfect casting ever, Pattinson and Dafoe were absolutely ideal for these parts. The characters we first meet are fairly predictable – Dafoe is a grizzled man of the sea, and Pattinson is a guy with a shadowy past who seems to be running from something. Their connection shifts from dislike to a sort of reluctant respect to...well, it’s difficult to describe what comes after that. The choice to film in black and white on 35mm film using an almost square aspect ratio amplifies everything. It feels confining; the actors look directly at you sometimes, the composition is flawless—it's something to see. This movie brought to mind a lot of things, from silent films of the 1920s to the unsettling _Begotten_. Get ready for a wild ride that will make your jaw tense as you witness beautiful devastation. As you might have guessed, I really liked this film. It’s not going to appeal to everyone because it's very much an art-house production and doesn’t adhere to typical movie conventions, but I suggest people check it out. You'll either love it or hate it. For my part, I wish I had seen this in a theater because I think it would have been incredible.
