I feared that my very high hopes for 'The Lighthouse' would inevitably lead to letdown, but thankfully and surprisingly, it managed to go beyond them. It’s an exceptional, perplexing, mesmerizing, frustrating, funny, unsettling, confusing, stimulating, complete whirlwind of a film, saturated with mud, sweat, salt, alcohol, waste, bodily fluids, raw shouts of anger and fear, the laughter of lunatics and the weeping of lost souls, the calls of seagulls and the sound of the ocean and a destructive clash between deities and humans. It stays with you after it concludes, lingers in your thoughts like old whiskey, and these past few days I've felt an intense desire to experience it again. Following what is likely the finest horror film of this century so far, Robert Eggers has produced another crazy American triumph, a kind of movie that comes from dreams and nightmares. It was absolutely worth every moment spent anticipating it.
