I found myself trying to place Daryl McCormack early on – then it struck me, “Good Luck… Leo Grande” from 2022. He delivers a strong performance here as well. This is a fairly ingenious thriller centering around his character, "Liam," an aspiring writer who gets the opportunity to tutor "Bertie" (Stephen McMillan) in his home. Bertie’s father is the celebrated author "JM Sinclair" (Richard E. Grant brings considerable personality to the role), and his mother, "Hélène" (Julie Delpy), is a talented pianist and artist. “Bertie” seems resistant at first, but as "Liam" settles into his role, they begin to form a connection, and the older man starts to understand that this family’s situation, still affected by a past event, isn't as perfect or harmonious as it initially seems. It becomes clear that the father, who appears self-assured and controlling, is actually an intellectual manipulator with secrets that "Liam" will be used in exposing. For me, Delpy truly shines; she plays the character pulling the strings, and her chemistry with McCormack works well as the story progresses toward a resolution that feels appropriate and somewhat unexpected. Crispin Letts also contributes to the atmosphere of unease as the butler “Ellis,” and the solid cast combined with competent writing help maintain a sense of suspense throughout. The beginning is a bit sluggish, but overall I found it quite enjoyable.
