John Chard on The Leech Woman

5/10 · May 23, 2014

I’ve always felt uneasy around elderly women! What else could you anticipate from something titled The Leech Woman? It’s essentially one of those science fiction “B” movies that were often shown as a preliminary attraction while audiences were still talking, snacking, and generally socializing. The storyline follows a familiar pattern seen in films like The Wasp Woman (1959), which explores the idea of a woman desperately trying to hold onto her youth as she ages. This involves some pretty wild science—in this case, a journey into the African jungle to discover how to live forever. As you might expect, things quickly go wrong, and suffering is inevitable. The film’s message is muddled; it seems to suggest, in an unpleasant way, that a woman's value lies only in her youth and beauty. However, it might also be offering a critique of vanity. The filmmakers’ purpose isn’t clear, so the audience is largely left to interpret it themselves. It doesn’t manage to be frightening, and some of the special effects look cheap and reflect the very limited budget. Also, the initial thirty minutes feel unnecessarily long. Nevertheless, considering everything, it's not among the worst examples of its kind and could actually pair well with The Wasp Woman. 5/10
