The setup for The Lazarus Effect seemed interesting at first, but it faltered once the scary parts started. The movie centers on researchers trying to find a way to bring people back from death, and they end up using their experimental treatment on one of their own after she dies unexpectedly. However, her return isn’t what anyone expected; she's become dangerous, malicious, and violent. The idea behind the film, combined with Blumhouse Productions being involved and actors like Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, and Evan Peters in the cast, led me to believe it would be a good horror movie. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. It felt as though the writers couldn't establish consistent guidelines for their own story. Was evil Zoe struggling against an internal darkness, or simply just evil? Did she have special abilities? Was there something demonic about her? Or was she just disturbed? The script never clearly defined what they wanted her to be. Because Zoe is so important to the plot and character development, failing to establish who she really was ultimately brought down the entire film. It wasn’t a complete disaster, though. I appreciated the ambiguous ending that suggested more terror could spread, but given how poorly this movie did, it's unlikely there will ever be a follow-up. The Lazarus Effect sealed its own fate and won’t be coming back.
