Bill Macy's character, "Charlie," seeks assistance from his former private investigator acquaintance, "Ira" (Art Carney), regarding his client “Margo” (Lily Tomlin)'s missing cat. He’s dismissive of her request, prioritizing the pursuit of those responsible for his partner’s death and urging her to simply pay the demanded sum. Due to their limited financial resources, she employs clever tactics to persuade him into investigating her grievance against "Birdwell" (Eugene Roche) and his elegantly dressed associate, “Lamar” (John Considine). Their initial encounter is awkward, despite Charlie receiving a complimentary Van Heusen shirt, but it initiates a chain of events for this grumpy older man who begins to suspect that locating the cat and finding his partner's killers are intertwined. Tomlin delivers a strong performance, though Carney truly shines as the overweight and disillusioned "Ira," struggling through a lighthearted detective story with brisk pacing, sharp exchanges, and absurd situations evoking comparisons to something like “Rockford Files” combined with “McQ.” The narrative does occasionally feel repetitive, but it remains an entertaining send-up of familiar tropes from this type of storytelling, which I found quite pleasing.
