Life’s grip feels tenuous when those nearest to you turn against you, and the people you're trying to safeguard seem oblivious to your existence. It seems like studio executives gathered around a conference table with the intention of creating a loud, entertaining series centered on Vin Diesel. The story follows Diesel as the main character, who in today’s world is supposedly the only thing preventing humanity from being destroyed by some very dangerous witches. This leads to plenty of action sequences, digital special effects, and Diesel trying his best despite not really seeming suited for the part emotionally. Elijah Wood, Michael Caine, and Rose Leslie are also present, though it's hard to deny they don’t quite fit their roles. There are some interesting concepts at the heart of this film; particularly the dreamlike sequences which suggest a much stronger movie could have been made. The action scenes are well-done too, preventing the film from being completely dull—though it gets close, and the high definition presentation is visually and aurally impressive. However, it never quite comes together dramatically, and the casting choices only reinforce that impression. Ultimately, The Last Witch Hunter is an acceptable way to spend some time if you’re not looking for anything too challenging. 5/10
