It’s strange to witness Vin Diesel in a supernatural setting; he seems more comfortable in science fiction, action, adventure, or thriller roles. The film contains plenty of action sequences, which prevent it from feeling like a true fantasy movie, despite the initial concept. Directed by the same person who brought us 'Sahara,' this tells the story of Kaulder, an immortal witch hunter. Aside from the beginning scenes, the majority of the plot unfolds in modern-day New York City, where he must thwart a witch attempting to resurrect a queen of witches. The movie felt like countless other stories about ancient worlds colliding with contemporary settings. I acknowledge that recent films have been influenced by CGI advancements over the past couple decades—even those considered less impressive—but this one seemed to appear out of nowhere. It wasn't adapted from any existing book, and it seems as if it was created simply to capitalize on Diesel’s popularity. Beyond that, there isn't anything fresh or original presented here. I did appreciate seeing Diesel in the film, but I believe he should avoid projects like this unless the script and character are worthy of his talent. The movie didn't perform well at the box office; it barely broke even, and critics were not kind to it either. Even dedicated fans of the star felt let down by it. It’s hard to fathom that a sequel has been announced, but I sincerely hope it doesn’t happen. A television series might have worked better than continuing this as a film franchise. Diesel's presence is what makes the movie watchable, and the plot itself feels like a familiar one—we’ve all encountered similar narratives before, even if with different actors and locations. For me, it was an unremarkable film; I wouldn’t suggest seeing it. However, if you are determined to view it, consider choosing the digital 3D version to at least appreciate some of the visual effects. 5/10
