I went into this film expecting to be let down, especially considering Arnold Schwarzenegger’s age and physical condition these days. To my surprise, though, it proved to be quite entertaining. It doesn't measure up to his best action films, but it’s still a worthwhile watch. The story is fairly basic – an escaped criminal tries to cross the border, and a determined sheriff (Schwarzenegger) attempts to stop him – something we’ve seen before. However, the racing sequences and a twist involving bridge construction kept things from feeling completely stale. It was good to see Arnold back in a leading role, even if he seemed a little out of practice. He appeared less physically imposing than in his prime, and lacked some of that characteristic swagger. While he certainly took down plenty of villains with violence, it felt more hesitant, missing the confident threats he used to deliver. The sheriff also made some questionable decisions; for example, I was frustrated when he turned his back on an adversary and got stabbed. Peter Stormare’s presence added a welcome element to the film. Beyond his being from my home country, I appreciate him as an actor. He brought some much-needed energy to the antagonists, though I found Gabriel Cortex to be a fairly predictable portrayal of a drug lord. The constant gear changes and fast driving eventually became repetitive. Similarly, the scene where he crashed a Suburban into a Corvette’s hood was just ridiculous; neither vehicle would have survived that impact. It's baffling how filmmakers continue to include these obvious and insulting moments, seemingly assuming audiences are naive. That assumption is incorrect! Forest Whitaker wasn’t bad as the FBI agent who gets manipulated, and I appreciated Luis Guzmán’s performance as one of the sheriff’s deputies. The rest of the supporting cast was rather unremarkable. The character intended to provide comic relief with historical weapons just seemed goofy to me. While the final shootout between the lawmen and criminals was enjoyable, it also felt unrealistic in its execution. For instance, using a bus to transport a machine gun made no sense except as an excuse for some stunts. Despite these flaws, I found this movie to be genuinely fun and not the disastrous return I had feared.
