Spencer Tracy feels completely comfortable in the role of the experienced, resourceful Irish-American mayor maneuvering through the complexities of his unnamed New England city as he confronts the wealthy business interests controlled by industrialist "Cass" (Basil Rathbone). The film leans into Irish-American stereotypes to some degree—corruption is widespread; there’s a fair amount of playful deception and pressure tactics employed for what's considered beneficial, alongside a bit of personal gain. A strong supporting group, including Jeffrey Hunter as his nephew "Adam," James Gleason ("Cuke") who delivers a particularly good performance, and Donald Crisp in the expected role of Cardinal, contribute to a well-constructed political story filled with sharp dialogue and gently humorous exchanges, most of which are delivered by Tracy’s assured presence. The conclusion didn't really satisfy me; it felt somewhat lackluster—like John Ford had lost momentum—but generally, the film moves along at a good clip, and those interested in contemporary American political maneuvering will likely find aspects that still feel relevant today. Perhaps it extends just a bit too long, but it remains an enjoyable showcase for Tracy’s charming acting style and is definitely worth seeing.
